Pierce Point Ranch, California
Pierce Point Ranch sits atop a windswept bend of California’s Point Reyes peninsula. Full of very well preserved 19th century buildings that make up the remnants of the once working Ranch that was established in 1858. I was able to walk through and around all of these buildings with my Hasselblad 501cm.
For this photo project I worked exclusively with a 6x6 medium format for the first time. I chose to shoot Kentmere400 pushed 1 stop with an orange 21 filter to distill the place to tone, texture, and form. While the sun kissed white of the buildings created a beautiful contrast to the lush green grass I still was drawn to black and white. The square frame emphasizes the ranch’s simple architectures and the rhythm of repeating elements. Monochrome allows the subtle gradations of sunlight to become the subject. The images aim to capture Pierce Point’s quiet resilience and calming bliss against the coastal wind. This was my first time solo photographing with intention, hopefully i’ll be back soon to see if I view compositions differently after more time behind the camera.
Despite the name I didn’t see any ranch dressing, but I did make sure to knock before entering… you never know.
